Noun: Definition, Types and Examples 

Noun Definition:

It is name (a noun is naming word) of a person, place, or a thing is called a noun.

For Example: Girl, Fatima, City, Multan, Book, etc.

Kinds of Noun:

  1. Common Noun
  2. Proper Noun
  3. Collective Noun
  4. Material Noun
  5. Abstract Noun
  6. Concrete Noun
  7. Countable Noun
  8. Uncountable Noun
  9. Regular Noun
  10. Irregular Noun
  11. Singular Noun
  12. Plural Noun
  13. Possessive Noun
  14. Compound Noun.

Common Nouns:

Common Nouns are names for people, animals, places or thing.  A common noun does not require a capital letter and takes an article before it man.

For Example: Girl, Book, and Computer

Countable Noun

Countable noun there are common noun that cannot be counted and can become plural.

For Example: Student, Book, Animal, Pencil and Cap etc.

Uncountable Nouns

These are common nouns that cannot be counted and cannot become plurals.

For Example: Water, Sugar, Machinery, Knowledge etc.

Proper Nouns:

Proper Nouns special or particular names of person, places, or thing are called proper noun. Proper Noun is always written with a capital letter at the beginning and does not usually take an article. In some cases they can have articles.

For Example: Irfan, Islamabad, Quran Majeed, China, Pakistan, Pascal

Collective Nouns:

Collective Nouns are the name of groups of persons, places, or things are called a Collective Noun.

For Example: Team, Class, Army, Family, Cattle, Bunch, and Crowd

Material nouns

Material Nouns is the names of things which are used for making things are called material noun.

For Example: Water, Grass, Rice, and Food

Abstract Noun

An Abstract noun is the name of some quality, state, action, considered apart from the object to which belongs.

For Example: Truth, Honesty and Wisdom etc.

Concrete Noun:

Concrete noun the names of things you can see touch or feel are called a concrete noun.

For Example:  Table, Stone, Book and Football etc.

Regular Noun:

The nouns which can be changed from their singular form to plural form without any changed in spellings. They become plural by adding an (s / es) as.

For Example: dogs, cats, girls, bats, bunches etc.

Irregular Noun

Irregular nouns change from their singular form to plural form with spellings changes.

For Example: Mouse changes to mice, goose change into geese, man change into men etc.

Plural Noun:

Plural Noun shows more than one thing, person, place is called a plural noun.

For Example:  Ideas, mice, girls etc.

Singular Noun:

A Singular is a noun that expresses / refers only one person place is thing is called a plural Noun.

For Example:  Ideas, mice, girls etc.

Possessive Noun:

Possessive Noun shows ownership. It is formed by adding an (‘s) apostrophe.

 For Example:  Aslam's Car. Nadeem’s Brother etc.

Compound Noun:

A compound noun is a word that is made up of two or more other words to make a new noun which gives a perfect meaning.

For Example:  The word “toothbrush” is made up of two words tooth and brush. Sugarcane, Blackboard

There are several main types of nouns in English:

Common Nouns vs. Proper Nouns

Common nouns are generic names of people, places, things, or ideas, like girl, city, apple, or happiness. 

Proper Nouns are specific names of people, places, things, or ideas, like Tina, Paris, Old Faithful, or The Elder Wand. They are always capitalized.

Singular Nouns vs. Plural Nouns

Singular Nouns refer to one person, place, thing, or idea, like boy, house, or freedom.

Plural nouns refer to more than one, often formed by adding -s or –es to the singular form, like boys, houses, or freedoms.

Concrete Nouns vs. Abstract Nouns

Concrete Nouns name things that can be perceived by the senses, like shoe, faucet, or basketball.

Abstract Nouns name intangible things like concepts, activities, or processes, such as freedom, evolution, or destruction.

Other types of nouns include:

Collective Nouns that name a group, like team, family, or audience.

Compound Nouns formed from two or more words, like toothpaste, ice cream, or jack-in-the-box.

Countable Nouns that nouns which we can count, like table, apple or rabbit.

Uncountable Nouns that cannot be counted, like salt, seafood, or advice.

Nouns are the most common part of speech and can serve many roles in a sentence, such as subject, object, or complement. They are essential for naming and identifying the people, places, things, and ideas that make up our world.
